World War I, the Great War, is usually remembered for the horrors of trench warfare on the Western Front, the gallantry of pilots in their biplanes high over the French countryside, or perhaps for the massive basttle of dreadnoughts at Jutland.

Yet the war at sea was a great challenge of wits for the opposing commanders, and no more so than on the Black Sea. The powerful Russian Army desperately lacked supplies. The only feasible supply route was through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus Straits, held by the Ottoman Empire.
